Chemical Peels Toronto: Types, Downtime and Results

A chemical peel uses a professional-strength acid solution to loosen dull, built-up skin so fresher skin shows through. In a Toronto clinic like ours, most peels are light to medium, with anywhere from no visible peeling to a few days of flaking, and they’re used for dullness, rough texture, breakouts and uneven tone. Most people get the most out of a series of three to six peels, spaced a few weeks apart.

Peels have an image problem. People picture a red, raw face and a week indoors. That’s not what most modern clinic peels are like. Here’s what the different types do, what the days after look like, and how to tell which one fits your skin.

What are the main types of chemical peels?

Peels are grouped by how deep they work. Deeper means more change, but also more recovery and more care needed with your skin type.

  • Light peels. Usually fruit or milk-derived acids (like glycolic or lactic) or salicylic acid for oily skin. Little or no visible peeling. Good for glow, mild texture and breakouts.
  • Medium peels. Stronger blends that work a bit deeper. Expect a few days of tightness and flaking. Used for uneven tone, sun damage and fine lines.
  • Newer low-flake peels. We offer BioRePeel, which is designed to brighten and refine texture with minimal downtime for most people.
  • Deep peels. These need much more recovery and are done in medical settings outside a clinic like ours. We don’t offer them.

Your aesthetician will choose the type and strength after looking at your skin. You won’t be choosing off a menu alone.

What is the downtime after a chemical peel in Toronto?

It depends on the peel. Here’s a rough day-by-day for a medium peel, so you can plan around work or plans:

  1. Day 1: Skin looks slightly pink and feels tight, like mild windburn. Most people go about their day.
  2. Day 2 to 3: Tightness, and flaking starts, often around the mouth and nose first.
  3. Day 4 to 5: Peeling is at its most visible. Moisturise, and don’t pick.
  4. Day 6 to 7: Most of the flaking is done. Skin looks smoother and brighter.

With a light peel or BioRePeel, many people see little to no flaking and just a bit of pinkness on the day. Results and side effects vary from person to person.

What results can you expect?

After a single light peel, most people notice brighter, softer skin within a few days. A series is what makes the real difference to texture, breakouts and uneven tone.

What a series of peels can help with:

  • Dull, tired-looking skin
  • Rough texture and clogged pores
  • Mild breakouts and the marks they leave
  • Uneven tone and light sun damage
  • The look of fine lines

For deeper acne scarring, microneedling usually does more. We explain why in our microneedling guide.

When is a good time of year for a peel in Toronto?

Fall and winter are ideal. Your skin is more sensitive to the sun for a while after a peel, and it’s easier to protect it from October to March than in July at the beach. That doesn’t mean summer is off-limits. Light peels can work year-round if you’re strict about sunscreen and shade.

One tip from experience: if you’re travelling somewhere sunny over the holidays, book your peel for after you get back.

Peel, Hydrafacial or laser: which should you choose?

  • Chemical peel: good value for gradual change in texture and tone over a series.
  • Hydrafacial: a deep clean and hydration with little recovery. Good before events.
  • Laser facials: more targeted for specific spots, pigment or pores.

Plenty of clients rotate: a peel series in the fall, a Hydrafacial most months, and a laser facial before something big.

Who it suits, and who should wait

A peel is usually a good fit if you:

  • Have dull or uneven skin, mild breakouts or rough texture
  • Can wear sunscreen daily and avoid tanning for a few weeks
  • Want steady improvement over a few months

Wait, or tell us first, if you:

  • Have a sunburn, a tan, a rash or a cold sore
  • Use a prescription retinoid or acne medication, or took one recently
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have melasma. Some peels suit it, some don’t, so it needs a careful plan. Read about melasma treatment in Toronto.
  • Have very sensitive skin, rosacea or eczema that’s flared

How should you prepare and care for your skin after?

Stop retinol and exfoliating products three to five days before. No waxing or threading on the face the week before.

After your peel, keep it simple: a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser and sunscreen. Let flakes come off on their own. Skip the gym and saunas for a day or two, since heat and sweat can irritate fresh skin.

Common questions

Do chemical peels hurt?

Most people feel warmth or tingling for a few minutes while the solution is on. It settles once it’s neutralised or removed.

Will my face peel a lot?

It depends on the peel. Light peels often cause little or no flaking, while medium peels usually flake for a few days.

How many chemical peels will I need?

Most people do a series of three to six, a few weeks apart. Your aesthetician will suggest a plan after your skin check.

Can I wear makeup after a peel?

It’s better to wait until the next day. Once flaking starts, use a light moisturiser and keep makeup simple.

Are chemical peels OK for darker skin?

Many peels can be used on darker skin with the right type and strength. We check your skin first and adjust the plan.
